The New Year brings a lot of new beginnings and resolutions. The most common one is to improve one’s health. People of all ages recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle: a balanced diet, exercise, plenty of water, and a good night’s sleep. But, did you know that good oral hygiene is also a step towards total health?
Research shows that there is a link between gum disease and other health problems. There has been evidence that bacteria in the mouth that are associated with gum disease may be linked to heart disease, artery blockages and stroke. Additional research suggests that the bacteria causes gum disease can be a contributing factor in “Bacterial Pneumonia”, which can also have serious consequences.
How can you keep your gums healthy and fight off periodontal disease?
IT’S EASY!
- Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day with fluoride to prevent tooth decay.
- Clean thoroughly between teeth daily with floss or another type of inter dental cleaner.
- See your Dentist on a regular schedule!
Proper brushing removes plaque before it can harden into calculus. Flossing is the only way to remove plaque that collects in the spaces of your teeth. But, only your dental hygienist can remove debris such as plaque, tartar and bacteria that collect below the gum line.
